Since you paddle, try SUP surfing! I spent last winter in Hawaii and got totally hooked on SUP. There's SUP friendly breaks, amazing views of fish and turtles while standing, and you can paddle out to meet pods of dolphins. I found locals to be totally open to any form of surfing as long as you're in the right spot. Short board, long board, SUP, Bodyboards, Canoes, all have there place (break) & are totally accepted. You better be a badass with thick skin if you paddle into the wrong wave with an inappropriate craft though. Kayak surfing is rare...
