Independence should be open then. The snowpack is below average up there, and normally it's open Memorial weekend.
#2 is a good option.
You might also consider taking I-25 south to Walsenburg and heading west on 160. There is the Sand Dune Pool (hotsprings) near the Sand Dunes National Monument by Alamosa, or you can continue all the way to Pagosa Springs where there are a few choices for soaking. Then come back to 285 and stop at either Valley View or Joyful Journey hot springs on your way to Salida.
If you choose to take route #3 I would suggest either turning off 133 at Paonia State Park and going over Kebler Pass to Crested Butte and then through Taylor Park and over Cottonwood Pass to Buena Vista, or turning off 133 onto 92 at Hotchkiss and going through Crawford State Park to Blue Mesa. You could still go over Cottonwood if you went that route (we got a nice hotspring at the bv side of the pass).
