Need advice Deso-Gray late August

Have never done Deso-Gray but drew a permit for a late August launch this year. Have heard a few people say it will be very low and difficult to get a raft down. Anyone have experience on this stretch at low water?

I can do it as a kayak solo, but wanted to take a friend down who has no river experience so thought it best to get a small crew together and put him in a raft. Would it be reasonable to put a newbie in a duckie on this stretch? Of course, it would be loaded with gear, which concerns me.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Easily raftable to about 800 cfs in bigger boats and I doubt it will get much below that due to the reliable Flaming Gorge releases upstream. The water can be deceiving to read in a few places so definitely be on your game reading the thalwag and not too drunk or you will be stranded mistreat cursing while you try to drag to the boat to the deepest current. Definitely be attentive at Dripping Springs, some of the channels above Steer Ridge, etc.

IK....its a "beginner friendly" run but consequences do exist so its hard to say without knowing your buddy. Some rapids will be easier for an IK at low water, like Joe Hutch, but places like Three Fords will pack a noticeable punch for an inexperienced paddler. Luckily the run has plenty of places to practicing flipping and righting an IK, practicing proper swim technique and al-around honing your skills. Water temperature will be friendly to swimmers.

We will be boating it in mid-October and happy with the low water.
