Must do Lodore hikes??

Hi there--

Launching for Lodore tomorrow and have an idea of some side hikes that we would like to do but just want to make sure we're not missing any. Is there any hikes that you would recommend. Thanks!

Butt Dam Falls is critical! i can't remember the real name of the place to eddy-out and hike from, but the ranger at the put-in can give you the beta on that. Put one person at the bottom of the falls, while the rest of the people go above the falls. You can sit everyone in the crack the water flows through, spaced apart by a couple feet, creating human dams that occlude the flow. Have the person below stand under the falls, and everyone else stands-up at once, allowing a super big wave to crash down on the person as they lean against the cliff and look upward. Nice!
Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.

Winnie's Grotto-pull into eddy just below rapid.

Limestone-climb hill behind, wind around to sick views of side canyons backdropped by the river, and a trickle of a long waterfall. One of my faves

Jones Hole-everyone knows about it,follow the creek to the first trail sign(junction) then take a left and----buttcrack falls,butt-plug falls,Ely falls or whatever you wanna call em. Sick pictographs right down the trail, just past the junction too(left to the falls, straight to the pictos)

The Cove camp-bigass obvious canyon behind the camp.

Edit:The BIG buffalo petroglyph on the river left wall, below Big Island,is one of the coolest pictographs or petroglyphs i've ever seen.....but you gotta find it first.

Double edit: Yakrafter, you missed out on another great Lodore trip.

Pretty much every camp has a hike:

Put-in - hike up to the Gates
Wade & Curtis - head downstream to Winnie's Grotto
Pot Creek - head up the side canyon, no real destination
Kolb - no hike
Rippling Brook - way cool trickle of a waterfall and the view that's on one of the posters
Wild Mountain - overview of canyon
Limestone - GREAT overview of canyon then can continue on to springs
Confluence - the Outlaw Trail (where the Wild Bunch rode) to an overlook of Echo Park
Echo Park - up the road to Whispering Cave and further to a really cool petro panel
State Line - no hike
Jones Hole - Ely Creek (i.e. Butt Dam) and petros, continue past the falls for some cool slick rock canyons
Comp - no hike
Rainbow Park - petros (hard to find if you don't know where they are)
Take out - hike back up the anticline.

That buffalo is river left at the end of some juniper trees just before where a big section of cliff landed in the river. I wouldn't advise stopping - lots of poisen ivy there.

Have a great trip, my wife's camped at Comp tonight. Work sucks. is offline   Reply With Quote
