Lower San Jaun

I have a permit to float the Lower San Juan starting June 12th. Forecast are putting the flows below a 1000. I have never floated it below a 1000, but I have been told I will be dragging my boat the last day or two. Any input would be appreciated.

We ran it last year on Easter Weekend around 700cfs. The ducks and a lightly-loaded oar-boat did OK, but my 14' cat was constantly getting stuck on sandbars. Also had strong headwinds four of the five days (had planned on a 3-day trip, but wind and low-flows required a couple extra days). The last day was actually the best since we ran it early in the morning when there was little wind, but still had to watch out for sandbars. Anyway, you should be OK if the flow is over 800 cfs. Below this and you should consider going backpack-style to keep the load light or just use ducks. Also try to get up early to get your boating in before the afternoon winds crop up if those turn out to be a problem. Good luck.

To avoid the sandbars in many instances look for the deep water along the bank or against the cliffs on the stretch of river below Grand Gulch. You may also have the additional advantage of being in shade if you find deep water on river right. Have a safe trip.

Couple of years ago we did it at <600 with overloaded big oar boats and we only had a couple of sandbar encounters. Below GG you just have to really concentrate on staying in the current, and get an early start so you're not fighting wind.
