Looking for instruction in Mexico. Recommendations?

I am a CO college student looking to get some good whitewater kayaking instruction over the winter break. My goal is to use this time to truly improve my paddling skills and move up from being a Class III paddler. At this point, I have found a lot of companies offering recreational activities or trips but no one that could provide me the desired instructional setting I am hoping for.

I am focused on Mexico since I know I need to be heading south to find water but I am not limited to the country either. I know that there are some cool things happening in Costa Rica too but that would be a much longer bus ride. If that's how far I need to go though to find that type of instruction, I am totally willing.

ANY recommendations would be HIGHLY appreciated. I've exhausted my local resources so now I am coming to you!

Mexico Whitewater

Grant Amaral is the owner operator. summers in Idaho winters in central Mexico.

I did his week of waterfalls back in 2000 I believe. He was just getting his camp set up on the Micos River and it was fun but a bit spartan. The area though is just full of great waterfalls and we did the Santa Maria as well as other well known runs.

Don't know if the cook lady is the same, but if she is, I still remember the super good eats she turned out every day. Chicken Mole one evening when we got in late. Have not had anything close to hers here in OK, TX and AZ so called great authentic Mexican cooking. All of us sat around the outdoor table guzzling beer, chicken mole and her hot tortillas with local butter and honey. Perfect ending to a long but fun day.

Like I said been a while but on that trip I had a excellent time. Grant is also a ACA WW Instructor or was at the time I was down there.

If you do go, be sure to have a "brain freeze" at the local milkshake shop in town.

I have forgotten how many times I have been down in that area (Valles) over the last 17years but I have not forgotten how awesome it is down there! I have made life long friends from there. People are awesome from that area. I just spoke to a friend of mine that runs Expediciones . She said the water in the Valles area is prime and hasn't been this good in years! If you are looking for any other shuttle info ect. Contact her (Ena). Tell her, the guy that gave her a lift down the Grand Canyon recommended her. Her and her employees are super friendly! Grant is set up just down stream from one of her camps. Her main office is in town. Speaking of town, you must eat at "Tacos Richards"! Any buzzards that have been there can attest! If you stay in town the hotels are cheap and tons of stuff walking dist. The Micos is about 20 min. out of town. I would also take a day and go check out some local attractions like Xilitla, it's an hour 1/2 South. mind blowing cool thing to do during a rest day! Lots of BIG sink holes not too far from the area also! Enjoy the trip!
