I'm a little curious here. You took a WW class but they didn't bring the students to moving water after the day on the pond? The only WW class I took had us in the pool the first session, which was a few hours in the evening. Next class was all day in Golden: morning in the little "goose pond" near the Rec. Ctr., and afternoon in part of the play park.
If you're worried, pick an easy place (might need input from a more experienced paddler when you're there), and just practice there. No need to go down all the drops if you don't want to. If you don't see other kayakers around, you can hoof it to Golden River Sports (at Washington and 8th or 9th St.) and ask Bart where would be best for a newbie kayaker.
Depending when you go, there may or may not be people to save your butt if you dump and can't roll up. I almost always go between mid-morning and early afternoon on weekdays, and usually the only others around are tubers, maybe a riverboarder or 2, and tourists strolling/locals eating lunch on the rocks. The water's pretty darned shallow now, so you might be able to just stand up and wade to shore. But it's also...rocky!
Oh, yeah, there's a good path along the whole thing, so it's easy to walk/look first.
