Kayaking in Costa Rica -Help/Advice-

I am traveling to Costa Rica very soon on a solo backpacking trip and really want to do some kayaking while im there. I have spoken with a few outfits that will rent me a boat and show me around for a decent fee. However they want me to bring my own gear (paddle, skirt, pfd, and helmet.)
As I am backpacking for a few weeks i dont see this as realitic, does anyone have any insight and advice on how i can get some boating in while on my trip?
I have also heard that taking my own boat and selling it while down there may net me a decent profit. input?

Just got back from there and really liked hanging with Meghan and Davis at the Chilamate Eco Retreat right on the Rio Sarapiqui. Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat (Costa Rica/Sarapiqui) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor Give Davis (he's a kayaker) a call at 506-88421171 and he may be a buyer for your gear and a place to store it while you're out and about. Safe Journeys!

Thanks Alan! I will definitely give him a call and see what he is looking for as far as gear. Were you able to kayak while you were down there? Do you have any advice on the sarapaqui?

The Sarapiqui has Casa Maquina which is 3 miles of crazy class V-V+ down to Recreo Verde, mebbe another 10 miles of III-IV from Recreo Verde to the lower sections of II-III 20 miles towards the coast. You've also got the Toro, the Sucio and the Puerto Viejo rivers all within 30 mins. Davis is a great guy trying to start a kayaking school for kids in the area who can't really afford the gear. If you are kid sized or have gear of that size, take it with and your karma will be washed. Call me if you want additional info 3-618-five815. Alan

The other person/hotel/shop I'd recommend talking with is Cacho at Hotel Mi Tierra in Alajuela. I did a handful of trips with him when I was living there last year. He's a great guy with great knowledge of the country and whitewater (sea kayaking as well) and seems to know people all over.

He's got a variety of whitewater boats from playboats to creekers along with gear. So if you might check with him and see what you could work out.

He isn't located in Turrialba or anywhere along the Sarapiqui would be the biggest drawback. The Sarapiqui is a fairly easy ~2 hour drive from his place, Turrialba is going to be 2-3 hours (or longer) depending on how you hit traffic.

Have fun, it's a great country with good food (though basic). I really miss fried plantains, ceviche and gallo pinto. mmmm...

White water kayaking Costa Rica

I'm so glad I found this forum, there is not a lot of info out there on kayak adventuring and travelling in Costa Rica. I am interested in heading to Costa Rica on my own in the next 2 weeks for the month of April to boat. As I'm going by myself, how easy is it to get connected with other boaters? It looks like Turriabla is the place to go. Any advice on where to stay or hang a hammock? I don't want to spend a lot, any advice would be useful!

Thank you,

Alicia, I just got back from my trip last week and took Alans advice and went to Chilamate and stayed at the Chilamate Rain forest resort. I worked with Selva Whitewater to rent a boat and paddle and get some insight for the local runs. they are right on the sarapaqui river with the Pozo Azul running into it as well both runs are class IV with the low water right now (its mid dry season)
Pozo Azul has a 30+' waterfall that is great if that is what your looking for.
also Buses from San Jose are cheap and available daily so your should really run the sarapaqui if you have the whole month!

Kayak School is fun stuff in Costa Rica- Check out Mario’s Costa Rica Kayak Tours - Jackson Kayak - Whitewater Kayaks, Fishing Kayaks, Recreational Kayaks Jackson Kayak – Whitewater Kayaks, Fishing Kayaks, Recreational Kayaks

Go to the town of Turrialba and ask for Mario. He's incredible. PM me if you'd like more details. He's got local knowledge, bad ass on the river, and understands kayakers.
