July 4th Cataract

Fellow boaters,

I'm planning a cataract trip with a lunch on the 4th. We are all ready to go but don't have a motor. NPS says "As of June 2012, the current of the Colorado River disappears around Dark Canyon, leaving over a dozen miles of lake before the takeout. Given this distance and the frequency of strong, up-canyon winds, motors are recommended."

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get off the river? Is anyone else taking off Saturday or Sunday that we can share a tow with? Anyone know how to get a tow or should we just buy a motor? Or just suck it up and row...

Have always 5-6times rowed out at night. Tie the rigs up in a line and get boat men to take 1 hour shifts while the rest drink or sleep. And remember to follow the bubbles they'll lead the way downstream.

Is this DBC Patrick? We did a bit of this style of night rowing towards the end of the Grand Canyon trip I did two winters ago. That was as much to cover miles as avoid wind.

I lost current in Gyspum Canyon July of 09 and rowed out till about 1 am. The problem was that you would end up in the bushes and not even know you were out of the main channel. The good news is that Cat is only running 4,000 cfs and you have another month of thirsty CA drinking up lake powell. You may only have a couple of mile push out, just don't plan on camping past dark canyon. I am running Cat on june 27th. I will give you an update.

I would find a motor asap if I were you. Also how many days is your trip. Just getting to the confluence is going to be tough with these water levels.

Wish we'd seen this before we left. At these water levels, a motor is a must, or you pretty much have to do some night floating.

How were the sand bars? How far did you make it the first night?

Any advice on the rapids? We are going in a week.

I would like to hear about a recent trip and conditions as well. Mainly curious if an 18' cat can make it down without hangups (assuming you row the rapids correctly).
