Hell's Canyon

I'm doing a week long trip with a massive group of people I don't know. What should I expect from the river? Water temp ok for swimming? I understand the water is very low...

does anyone in the Steamboat Springs area have a 5-10 hp motor I can borrow or rent?

In a couple weeks swimming will be great. Super hot day and night. Huge beaches no trees. No need for a motor if your taking out at Pittsburgh. A week is a long time for that run. Its damn controlled so flows will be good.

We're floating 5 days, putting in the Monday the 24th. Taking out at Heller Bar. I understand the end of the trip is the part that the trip leader is concerned about being slow. Virtually everyone is flying to boise for the trip, and as I'm driving from Colorado, I've been assigned to bring the heavy cumbersome items.

Thanks dirtbag

I have rowed the last 20 miles a few times; I don't think it is that bad if you get a decent start in the morning. Some folks hate it and take the motor but I prefer a little more work in trade for more piece and quiet. A slow row while enjoying some barley pops and the next thing I know I am at Heller.

I recommend spending as much time as possible in the upper canyon and then make miles later in the trip.

It will be hot as hell soon as stated above and the swimming is great.

I just got off a three day trip to Pittsburgh Landing last week. Two years ago I did the same stretch in four days. I definately recommend spending four days in the upper section if you can. It is easy enough to make the miles in three days, but staying four gives you more side trip and camping options.

Even a week ago the water was cool, but not cold. The swimming was great.
