Very true Chuck, surprise, surprise.
As far as AIS stickers are concerned, they are more for non-residents, I think $15 for non-motorized. Its my experience, (and I've purchased over 30 for the shop's rental fleet) that I would buy one online from the State Game and Fish website: https://gf.state.wy.us/elso/elsoaiswelcome.aspx
. ahead of time, before you leave on your trip, that way you have it when you cross into the state.
If you buy one at a gas station around Cody, they just give you a receipt that you are supposed to carry with you on the water and the sticker comes in the mail.- The receipt is a much bigger pain in the ass than the sticker.- Also, since the sticker does not stick on a raft, they wardens tell us to put the sticker on a luggage tag of some sort and affix it to the raft.
It's almost impossible to not stop at the check station near the main Shoshone in Cody, the only time I can blow by it is when they knock off after 5 PM or on Some days it's just not open. Just have a clean, dry boat and there shouldn't be any problems, and I wouldn't mention that you have floated into Lake Powell recently or anything like that or it might be a bigger deal than you want.
river is already up around here, 1,600 cfs, should get big.
