A buddy is coming in from out of town and we're heading up to gore canyon to give it a shot. It's running a little high today at 2400cfs but it's also daaaang hot right now, so it should be lower next weekend after the heat.
Anyone wanting to run that day too, let's hook up.
I was a guide in Utah on Westwater and Cat for 3 years and I'm new to Colorado but would like to try gore along with some other sections. I have run parts of the arkensas, gunny gorge, roaring fork, salt, and shoshone at high water, but nothing quite like gore. If you don't mind showing us the run we would love to join you. I have a 14 ft sb if that would be good for the run. Let me know at stacie@lycos.com or 801-391-4059.
Gore is running at 3690 right now which is unbelievably burly. Heat is not letting off and it is supposed to be hottest this friday making the run possible in the 3K range, perhaps as high as now if there is four more days of snow available to sustain this bump.
Noticed that rafters tend to like the 650 to about 1100cfs range, it helps making the moves a lot more doable. Have run it about 40 times now, with the highest being just below 2K, which started to get pushy. Therefore at easily 3-4 times the average flow, this would be an unusual experience for all of us. Yeah, I have a lump in my throat.... whew. It still runs during the lowest portion of the season since Gore Canyon is dam controlled so it should be no problem if you decide for a more reasonable level in your rig later.
For your info, we'll be bringing at least 3 CreatureCraft and 3 people so far; Two two seaters (G2/G4 Hybrid, G4) and a four seater G3. We'll have two oreframes and at least four seats available for multiple setup options. Shane is taking his hybrid as an oreframe, I'll be R2-ing with Randy and someone (you or someone equally skilled) can take the G3 as an oreframe or R2 it with an addl person. I recommend oreframing it, since it yields the most control... my favorite way to do Gore actually. Conversely, your 14ft self bailer could be a blast in there! Plan is to camp fri night, start early morning, take our time during the run, scout often, stop to film and avoid 2pm winds if possible. Please join us.
The biggest footage I've seen is from Darren running it at 3K and actually gore rapid looks sooo much easier. He is in Peru this week (and actually a little bummed about missing gore) but said to watch out for the rocks as they are still sharper at the high levels since it doesn't run like that often. So no hitting rocks in the *really* fast and big water... yipes. I'll dig out some footage of gore rapid at 3K and post it later... most likely tomorrow.
Yeah, Stacie, bring your big throw bags so you can haul all of those POS Creature Crafts out every hole they try to run but get stuck in or wrap every rock they slam into cuz they perform like floating turds. Don't think you are going to see any great lines if you go with this crew.
Here is some footage from their site of them running Gore. I guess this looks good to them. I'd be more inclined to burn the footage than try to use it to sell my product.
As for throwbags, yes, bring an extra one. We'll be bringing extra gear, body harness and are planning to setup safety at tunnel and toilet bowl. Better safe than sorry out there.
Check out more pos rides at this one, only this is at 3000cfs:
First is a shot of G1 going down Applesauce, then Gore rapid. Notice how the rock above gore rapid is becoming a pourover and below is just pure gnar-gnar.
The 2004-10 footage shows us going left after ginger, as we always do (bad line?). Conventional rafts usually go right. That's Darren and Bob talking mad shit on the camera as Jason and I are getting a little surfbreak in this cute little divot before gore rapid.. why they were doing that, I don't know, but I found it amusing so I left it in the footage and slapped it up on the website!
I would love to join the trip but I'm a little concerned about the 14 footer. I was just talking with my boss Joel Bishop (He claims to know everyone and says I can trust you guys for a good run) and he says doing it at this level in a regular raft could be death but would be awesome in a creature craft. I would love to try one out. If you have enough room to accomodate us, I have 3 people dying to do this run-me, husband, best friend. If you don't have the room I can take the friend on a later trip.
Once again, you are welcome to join. As for the "possibly less than experienced" that you mentioned, this would not be their trip until the level goes down to a more predictable one. Much love to all, but with the water as it is, now is not the time for tomfoolery with folks new to the sport.
Most likely, Joel is actually in the footage posted above (Jim's son, that is). We are not looking at partaking in death at any point in time soon, so a death wish is simply not an option. When the level comes down to a more reasonable one, the other two you mentioned should get some practice in many of the other available places.
Oh, as for the body harness, here is how this works: We put the person in it who is handling the throwbag. That way, when the key person makes a connection, they don't get 'yanked' in the river... get it.. brilliant!!
Stacie, please join us and we will be happy to see you. Chris Lions is going too, so now we are at 5... not sure what it means to the logistics. Will have to go to the shop in the morning and check the gear to see what in the world we have available. No problem for you. I'll be adding extra D-rings just for rigging..... I will call you tomorrow (Wed). Leave the 14 footer for another day at barrel ( I would love to go on a Carnage run with you all yippee) and hop in one of ours. Jim is right, we choose not to hurt ourselves or others around us and intend to keep it that way.
Check the post for the 3900cfs run... maybe they'll put on pics or footage to get an idea.. Can't wait.
I wasn't worried about their experience. We are all a bunch of river bums and my husband has actually run more river sections than I have. I just wanted to make sure you have the room if I don't bring the 14 footer. I would like to at least bring my husband. He has a better photographic memory, so when we go to run it again, he will remember the layout of every rapid and where to scout. Let me know how many seats you have. Any of us can row or paddle, either way. My husband will kill me if I go without him, so we will need at least two seats to be able to join you, or if the level happens to drop under 3500 I will bring the raft. Give me a call today and we can work it out. I will be at work until 6:00 pm 244-3301. Just ask for Stacie
Found out this morning that I have Aaron's shorty, need to get that back to you. Expect to hear from Chris and Shane shortly about the footage and will pass it along as soon as I get it. It was a great time running with you! Well done!
Gore and Kirschbaum looked like the NF Payette, maybe you should go there with us sometime. Same thing, only more of it minus the pool drop business.
Barrel Springs is still running because of the torn pipes at Shoshone and if any of you have time mid-week, this could be a fun run, even if we prep to meet up after work and head up there loaded and ready. Putin would be at lower death and try for barrel rolls and backflips most of the way down. Think about it.
We would love to run anything with you. Those boats are awesome! I would have to run on Friday, Saturday, or before 2:00 pm on any other day. Aron gets off around 7:00. We both work long hours on weekdays to pay for our boating every weekend.
Our Cat trip is July 20, 21, 22, 23. Anyone is welcome to come if they want to. It's going to be low water so it will be really calm.
We can get that shorty the next time we see you.
Anyone want to buy a boat? We are selling 3 of ours to get a creature.
