Good camping near Jackson

Making a weekend trip up to Jackson soon. Anyone know some less-traveled camping areas close by?

will any features in alpine be somewhat friendly @ 20k?

History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.

not sure if its still free but i used to camp on the elk reserve for free, but you may want to confirm this with the local kayak shop in town or check w/ forest service. hope that sends you in the right direction.

Some nice camping at Flag Ranch north of Jackson. Good hot springs.

Shadow Mtn is good primitive spots relatively close to town. Go past Kelly, past GV road and just keep going. Can't beat the views, but not less travelled. Farther out, Flagstaff Road behind the Hatchet...

Greys River has lots of good spots to camp,& it's cranking right now. Also close to Snake canyon. Granite creek has options too.

I second Shadow Mtn also nice MTB ride) you can camp right at the base of shadow mountian (with other folks) or drive up the forest road a mile or 2 for many huge campsite options with views. This is nice location for being "near" jacskon and Gros Ventre runs

Like mentioned- Greys is also nice. The canyon is tight (first 4-5 miles) and camping is roadside with some river access. There are a few great ones on the right just a mile in. These are right past the bridge over the Greys and jsut downstream from Snagglepuss Rapid. This is nice location for Alpine Canyon runs.

You can't camp on the elk refuge itself but there is a road on the southeast end of it that leads to free camping just east of the refuge. nice camping spots, free, and the closest camping to town. Local kids tend to party there and I once had a close call with some drunk idiots that came into my campsite while I was sleeping though.

National Park Lodging: Gros Ventre Campground - Grand Teton Lodge Company
This is where we used to camp when I lived in Yellowstone.
