Fun preseason trip read for anyone planning on running the Illinois

Handbook to the Illinois River Canyon by James M Quinn, James W Quinn and James G King. Copyright 1979...

I picked it up from the local library, the book has a ton of history of the area as well as stories like how Horsesign creek/butte got its name and who Shorty Noble is including a photo that they took when they met him.

The mile by mile guide includes a move by move description on how to run the rapids, areal photos which were obviously taped together to show the full stretch of the river and anecdotal stories about the stretch of river.

There are also a ton of great photos of what rafting looked like in the 70s and surprisingly enough a lot of the gear would fit in with what we are all using today.
