diminished tubes

What are the pros and cons of diminished tubes? Does anybody have any beta on the NRS Nez Perce E160, 16 foot raft as an all around boat for running small rivers....up to the Grand?

Thanks Jeff

One of the evolving great debates. In theory the diminished tube decreases surface area and thus drag on the bow and stern, offering a more responsive rig that tracks better. Supposed to give you a larger boat that handles like a smaller one. Or so it's been explained to me. My experience is that it pressures the floor further into the water, which in my opinion is what decreases performance. For my money I like the extra floatation front and back. I'd rather spend the money on a 7 piece bow and stern (rather than 5) that also kicks the ends up, and buys you more cargo room.

performance questions aside, the main advantage is the increased space in the bow and stern areas. You get the interior space of a 16 footer out of a 14 footer, or so they say.

Fly rod is right (or completely wrong in the head, just look at his avatar). I have a 14ft Maravia Diablo witch has diminishing tubes. I get so much more room when I load it up than I would with a normal 14'er. I am not sure it is like having a 16' er but it is better. As for the performance questions I am not sure it makes a whole lot of difference. I have been driving regular tube boats for 10 years and I am not sure I have noticed a big difference. I R-2 the rig alot and it feels like a smaller boat than it is. It also feels like it punches waves and holes better and provides a splashier ride. But I could also just be really excited about my new boat and imagining all of this shit.

As for the second part of your question. If the NRS Nez is the same as the Riken Nez Pierce (and I think it is), then take that shit down the grand. Those boats are great in the big water and great to row, a buddy of mine has taken his down nearly all of his 30+ grand trips.

I know someone with one of these, and they claim the passenger ride up front is wetter, more splashy.

OK, dumb question of the day. Also a thread hijack. Sorry. What does R-2 mean? Is that just two paddlers?
