Deso-Gray Bug Report

Am putting in at the end of the week. Does anyone have any current info on how our mosquitos are doing? Any other useful beta?

Bug Report

Took off Deso the evening of the 15th - no mosquitoes on the trip! There was a decent amount of small flies but nothing real unpleasant - and some biting deer flies here and there but overall the bug situation wasn't bad at all.

Thanks Fatmanz,
Anyone else more recently off of Deso?

We ended our Deso trip on the 19th and report the same bug situation as FatmanZ. No mosquitos, just small flies and the occasional biting deer fly. One of our camps in some boxelder trees had a major box elder bug hatch. Thousands of babies swarming all over the ground. Pretty mellow though, we didn't use a tent on the trip.

Off the river on the 23rd...worst bugs (hatch?) in the 8 years I've been on the Green, mainly gnats and gray flies. Had WIND every day that created 1-2 foot swells and water spouts...did not get rid of the bugs. At Flat Canyon, felt the spray of water from the river, nearly 1/8 mile away! Good technical water level, ending at 4450 cfs. Both Joe Hutch and Coal Creek were kicking...medium waves and a few laterals just for fun. Recommend scout. 300 acre fire at Rock Creek, about 2 miles from mouth...asked by Jim the ranger not to hike up. Hardly anyone on the river.

Thanks for the report 2Tom. I will also be hitting Deso this weekend and I guess we will be bringing the screen tent after all! Hopefully wont have the wind problems. Wondering if the detour is still in place? I heard the roads are in good shape though. Any beta appreciated! Thanks!

from other conversations, it appears the roadwork detour is still in at Myton.

Highside, QuietHunter:
Also putting in/on saturday; will be at sandwash friday night. Look forward to seeing you all. We'll be in a crew of 5 boats with a few IKs it sounds like...and a handful of children. Hope to see you guys at Sandwash or on the water.

Looks like flows will be near 2k at put-in...hopefully you guys are in top down-river, wind against you rowing condition...

Thanks for the update. We are putting in on the 8th with some first timers but I haven't done deso this low before (did it at ~13k).

I'm fully expecting to have to row through the flats but, in general, what is the river like at this level? Looks like three fords will be the crux...

Scottcsu - Putting in on Friday. Planning for a layover day, so likely will see you on the river. 5 boats including a hard to miss faded out old yellow bomber Hyside, an oyster colored Rocky Mountain, couple of duckies, multiple cases of beer and a few teens / pre-teens.

Hoping the bugs think we are not worth gnawing on.

We did Deso in early May at 3000-4000 cfs. No bugs that early, and the usual wind, but nothing terrible. No microbursts. The big thing was little to no current.....and not just in the first section. If you weren't in a rapid, you were rowing. One person in our group likened it to rowing on a lake for 7 days. We were planning on 1-2 layovers, and ended up doing none. Joe Hutch looked and sounded harder that it was. Enter left, move right, stay off the rocks and wall on the bottom left. Three Ford was tight and laterals slapped us around a bit, but not too bad. Coal Creek was a zig zag through the rocks. Put-in was really low and rocky.....difficult to just back up the trailer and dump the boats in the water. Have fun & load up on bug spray!
