Crested Butte Area Camping - Ideas

We are headed to CB this afternoon for some family time. Might get on the water, I don't know yet. Looking for camping areas. I have looked at all the NFS sites, so I generally know about Cement Creek, Lake Irwin and the NFS sites up near Taylor Park Res. Does anybody have any great spots that they would care to share. PM me if you do not want to post. We will be driving in a mid 80's VW Westfalia. It has decent clearance, but is not 4wd. I would ideally like to be near a body of water, but that is secondary to being in a chill spot.

Claimer: Someone that makes a claim that they have been there and done that, can do anything you can do better than you. I hate "claimers"

Taylor Canyon has some great USFS campsites, but there is a fee. Kebler Pass does not require high clearance and has some good spots too. Cement Creek might get a little burly for a Westfalia. Above Taylor Res. there is some good spots next to the creek, minus shade.

There is FS improved camping up the Slate River drainage and past the Gothic townsite as well as pull offs. All off maintained dirt roads. The Slate campsites are next to or close to the river.

I'd go up Kebler Pass and find a spot for your rig near Lake Irwin. It's close to C.B. and very scenic. Have fun!
