Class III around City of Rocks, ID??

Heading to the city on a climbing trip next week. Thinking about bringing the boats, any good class III around there for a rest day?

There is Murtah Canyon on the Snake fairly close. The Payettes are another 4 to 5 hours from the City.

Murtaugh Canyon ( Snake River, Idaho )

The alpine canyon on your way there or back would be a good bet, murtaugh might be a bit of a big step for your first season if you consider yourself a class III boater. Jump on redtail while in the city, best damn sport climb ever.

The Murtaugh isn't running. I would leave the boats at home unless you're willing to drive to Boise on your rest day.

I've top roped a couple 5.8s maybe a 5.10 near the city of rocks but I don't know of much near by runs at all. How hard is it to get to the Jarbrige? Mostly class 3 and the portages for the bigger rapids are not too bad with a kayak. Anyway, I think your going to need to be perpared to put some drive time in.

class 3 near city of rocks

I lived in Almo, Idaho for several of my early yrs before moving to burley until graduating high schoool and moving to boise. I would leave the boats unless u have a few extra days to drive to boise.....
Murtaugh isnt running and is more of a big water class 4 anywho. Jarbridge is a great canoe float but wouldn't be what you were after.... Bliss run and malad river are several hrs from city of rocks.(2-3hrs depending on which route.) Bliss has the "bliss" wave if you wanna park and play but not much else to it. Malad run is full on class 4+...
If youre looking for class 3 near city of rocks u are outta luck.... Drive to Banks (4hrs 29mins on google maps) and hit the payette if u want a good class 3 run. The main payette is at 5800cfs today and rising..... plus has everything u could ask for from class 1- class 6 within an hr any direction. I use to look at the flows and runs around Boise and southern Idaho.
