Change your plans! Big Thompson is running!

As of 3:15 it's at 489 cfs! Also, what the hell? Why couldn't this release be timed to at least be useable for us kayakers? I know the world doesn't revolve around us, but one wouldn't think it be so hard as to wait a little later in the day to release. I haven't seen anything on the Buzz about this being announced so wanted to get it out everyone. By the way, anyone around in the know as to how long the release is going? I hate to flake and I am not sure I can get my buddies to change plans, but I really don't want to miss this.

The gauge is vertical, currently at 774! I've never seen the Big T that high in my short boating career. The NF is also dumping in 250 at Drake. I wonder what's being taken out at the dams? The section below Drake could be over 1,000?!?

From Kara at 10:30 last night:

Good evening everyone,
Tonight, we are increasing our releases from Olympus Dam at Lake Estes to the Big Thompson River.
At 10:00 p.m. we bumped releases from 125 cfs to 225 cfs.
At 11:00 p.m., we will bump up another 100 cfs to 325 cfs.
It is possible we will increase releases to the Big Thompson again later tonight and/or tomorrow morning.
The reason for these changes is we are seeing the snowmelt run-off in the Big Thompson river begin its annual peak. With the warm temperatures in the high country during the day, the snow pack has been melting. The snow run-off has spent the afternoon and early evening traveling downstream and is now coming into the Lake Estes reservoir. We are bypassing some of that native inflow through Olympus Dam and on down through the Big Thompson Canyon.
As always, I'm happy to answer any additional questions. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail by replying to this message.
Have a good weekend,
Kara Lamb

From Kara this morning:

Good morning everyone!

As you have probably noticed, our releases to the Big Thompson from Olympus Dam continued to increase through the night. As of 8:30 A.M. we are releasing 700 cfs down the Big Thompson Canyon. It is likely we will increase releases to 800 cfs in the next couple of hours.

Please feel free to email me if you have any additional questions.
