Watch out for poison ivy! Don't miss your lines or portages. High water might be intense. I would make a shitty guide, unless you want a three day trip...I want to go back but not with people I don't know, unless they know the way down the canyon.

Here is a video from our trip last fall.

You don't need a guide if you are a competent class 5 kayaker. there will be portaging, it will be hot, there will be poison ivy, it will be a cool trip if your not afraid to work for it. The only beta you need is that after the waterfall get out a few hundred yards downstream on the right and start portaging, it can take anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours, try to find the milo super highway. 1600 is a medium high level and you will be punching holes and some of the bigger drops are gonna be huge (next generation will be marginal) but should be a fun level.

I think 1600 is more than "medium high." When was the last time anyone went in there at that flow? Tom have you ever been there that high? When in doubt, defer to the guidebooks re: water level, not Tom-its-all-medium-brah-Janney. Just an FYI to the OP.

My first time was at 13-1400, and I would say that is medium. over 2000 might be getting to the high territory but people have run it around 3k

1600 is low, new generation is class IV (even Sean Lee runs that shit) and the great falls portage is a IV+. I'd look for approximately 9200 on the gauge for the sieves to fill in.

And in case this wasn't clear before: I'm way sicker than tj and ACC. WAY sicker.

PS--In all seriousness my first time down was 1400. We were sans guide and I thought it was awesome. And we weren't a crew full of sick-brah-hucksters. It was a rad adventure in one of the most special places on earth. We did plenty of suffering through poison ivy choked portage/scouts and sketching out over what was around the every corner.

The suffer/adventure factor gets reduced a LOT if you take a solid guide but then you might be missing out on a crucial part of what makes the trip so special.

It doesn't take much poision ivy for me to break out; I assume the portage would kill me sometime in the following week?
