Big South Questions

I've heard from a couple of people that I need to be able to read and run V- comfortably to have a good day on the Big South but I've also heard that you can have a great IV+ day on the Big South with a handful of portages.

How do the rapids other than the big 3 compare to say the Steeps in Bailey?

I know that if I portage/scout a lot it'll be a long day but it sounds like a good all day adventure.

Last but probably most relevant, Is Big South still running?

We paddled last weekend and it was 2' on the rock, which I thought was a minimum. Haven't heard any reports since then, but the main stem has been dropping.

If you had a guide and feel comfortable with Bailey including 4 falls, Tampax and Deer Creek you'd be golden. Definitely a step up from the steeps. On Big South you actually want specific lines, where as the steeps you can get by just kinda read and run.

Without a guide it'd be stressful(if you're a IV+ boater) and a super long day.

Yeah, its more like running Deer Creek and tampax about 12 times all on verbals. It is really a great run but because there are soooo many drops you can't look at every 4+/5- drop, that would take something like 12 hours to get through. You will want a guide you are comfortable with to tell you the lines. Minus the big 3, Fantasy flight and one or two others, the lines are fairly easy to make. The stuff in the Big South that doesn't have a name is more like the steeps, and there is plenty of that, especially in the lower half.

That being said I think it is done for the year.
