Animas River- Howardsville to Silverton

Howdy guys. Have the weekend free and am looking at heading to Silverton to run the Animas Howardsville to Silverton stretch. Hear it's 5 miles of class III. Don't have to much beta. Trying to get a local's idea. We are a solid group of class III-IV boaters, living in AZ so not getting out too much. looking for beta. We were talking about leaving Friday, hitting the Stoner Stampede on the Delores, then heading to the Animas river days to watch and hang, or boat the town stretch, or go to SIlverton. Not too sure open for ideas. Thanks. Basically we are looking to gte out of town, boat some class III water, camp not too far and enjoy.
Thanks in Advance

So you would be boating Howardsville to Silverton on Friday? What about Eureka to Silverton? I have no beta and have never run them, but imagine about now is the best time to float it. High-ish, not bringing it above IV (i imagine). Very runnable, so long as you are balanced. LOTS of good camping around Silverton. To the east, north, and west especially.

We are leaving Flagstaff on Friday. Trying to camp near Stoner on Friday, run the stoner stampede Friday or Saturday am, then drive up to either Durango or Silverton area. Have a free weekend, money for gas, and the desire to boat. Was thinking fun class III somewhere in CO. Silverton is also having a beer fest and then the Animas River Days in Durango. Just looking for beta. Don't know much of other stretches you mentioned.

Have you ever thought about getting on the Sawpit section of the San Migel. I looked at it when we were headed back from the Dolres and it looked like lots of wave fast water wave trains. Would probably cut out alot of drive time....

Hey Tony, I have been considering that stretch also...looked at it early this spring and it looked scenic and fun, but relatively easy. No trip to the Ark?.....I am planning to run over to the Taylor with a crew this weekend if your plans change....if not, have fun on the Dolores and Animas!
