BLM Taking Final Comment On Ruby-Horsethief Recreation Plan
posted June 6, 2011 by Nathan Fey
Grand Junction, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering a final opportunity for the public to comment on a proposed permit and fee system for the Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River.
The BLM will consider comments received during this public comment period prior to making a final decision. The public comment period begins on June 6, 2011, and will close at 5 p.m. on July 6, 2011. Public comments can be sent to Ruby-Horsethief Management Plan, 2815 H Road, Grand Junction, CO 81506, or by email to email@example.com

Under the proposed action, the BLM would limit overnight camping to 35 designated sites, and visitors would be required to obtain permits for overnight camping during the busy spring and summer months. The EA also describes a proposed fee for overnight camping, which the BLM will present to the Colorado Recreation Resource Advisory Council (RAC) within the coming months. The BLM developed the proposed permit system to address resource damage and visitor conflict issues due to increased visitation on this section of the Colorado River. Visitation has been steadily increasing over the past decades, and reached an all-time high of 20,000 overnight visitors in 2010. The proposal, if approved, would be implemented in 2012.
The Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River runs through the heart of the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area, and serves as one of the primary access points for Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness.
