Zebra mussel reg's at Boulder reservoir

I think the days of free kayaking at Boulder res are done.

They now have a zebra mussel inspector that checks to make sure your boat is dry and free of mussels before you can go on the water.

Each craft must buy a $10 season pass for this service.

I assume they no longer allow boats to carry in at the north (free) trailhead.

Gate entry is $6 a head.

has anyone noticed if they have posted signs out at the North trailhead discouraging boats?

For motorboats they are requiring a 2 week quarantine along with steeper inspection fees, including an extra fee to "lock" your boat to it's trailer if you want to take it off of their property between uses.

I imagine this will greatly reduce the # of boats on the res.

Too bad this will probably have very little effect. The water from the Rez comes from so many channels that have fishermen, and many other ways to introduce invasive species outside of kayakers/motorboats. I commend them if it makes a difference, but sadly as in New Zealand with the funk down there, it just seems futile...

I haven't been out to the free north end trailhead this year, but, at the end of last summer while in my boat at the north trailhead part of the lake, the lake patrol came by and told me that these new regs were going to be in effect in a few weeks, and that I would have to enter via the main gate once they went into effect.
Dave no stress, there's always the pond by your house at south boulder rec center, take your nose plugs, goose poop has a way of finding a path into your sinuses.

I can't claim to know much about the life cycle of these pests, but the inspector claims they exist in a higher lake already in the system, but they can not survive in a true river environment, so they don't just float downstream into the res.

This mussel is totally different than the Didymo algae thing.

Apparently they have only been found in a very few CO locations at this point, Pueblo res being the biggest.

if i understand correctly they are not a river problem.

One day we will regulate away all of our freedoms. I hate Boulder, they lead the charge.
