YOu want to boat in Canada? Better read this...

I came across this article by accident. Basically, all kayaks have to be licensed/registered, whatever, in Canada. Not sure who thought this idea up, but it sounds a lot like the stuff they're doing in Oklahoma.

Kayak Registration in Canada - Adventure Kayak, The Sea and Touring Magazine

And the Lord said, let there be whitewater. So on Friday, the 13th day of the month....

This is definitely worth watching because kayak registration, like bike registration, just makes no sense. It's required in Idaho, but does nothing beyond contribute a few bucks to a worthless program aimed at quagga mussels from power boats.

From what I can tell this new Canadian requirement only extends to boats "involved in a 'commercial activity.'" Now, that could be a royal pain in the ass for an American paddling schools or camps that do trips to Canada but I don't think it extends to privately owned boats. Still, it could be a problem in the future. Hopefully the Canadian outfitters will kill this thing for us.

Just a quick update but I'm up in Canada and I'm pretty sure the whole thing is shot down so no worries for now....

While I am always wary of any law that requires almost anything of me, not all the boat registration is completely bad. I worked at a research center in OR for a while and had a bunch of friends in the Oregon DFW. They were just introducing a new registration for boats listed as "transportation vehicles" over 13 or 15 feet or something.

Most WW kayaks don't qualify but my canoes did (and strangely enough so did SUPs). You got one registration card for life for $5 and passing a quiz and it would work on any boat you were in. Not a real fund raiser so much as an awareness of invasive species which are a big deal. Colorado, being landlocked and cold, has been lucky in that department. Some of the marine invasives are really wreaking havoc in the NW and the longer we can hold back zebra mussels the better.

That being said, it's all in the execution. The article makes it sounds like the kanuck registration was onerous and ridiculous; submitting pictures and 40 hours of work. That's bureaucracy for ya, glad it sounds like it fell flat.
