I'm normally MO / ARK river floater, but going out west this year. We would like to canoe and kayak the yampa if possible late July. Wondering about couple things.
  1. Does the river flow west?
  2. Will I have any trouble with my canoe?
  3. Are there open fires allowed while camping along the river?
Thanks for any help!

Yes, the Yampa is on the Western slope of the Rockies and does flow west. The section that flows through Dinosaur National Monument is lottery-permitted. That is, you need a permit to run and the lottery is closed for the season. If you want to float Dinosaur, you might try finding a group with open seats. As for having trouble with a canoe, if you don't have experience on big class III-IV water you will be earning your wings so to speak. You might want to consider hooking up with a professionally guided tour for your first run at a river like this.

Go to the Dino Natl Monument website and read all the regs, they are ample. After high water use season you might be able to go but flows will be an issue that late. There is also a lot of special equipment that must be carried for fires, etc. it's in the regs.

Late July you're probably not going to have enough water regardless... is offline   Reply With Quote

What about yampa from steamboat springs to craig? Would that be an option for canoe in late July / early August? Assuming the flow is > 400 cfs, would that section be an option?
We're looking to camp along the river for two nights if possible.

I have never boated it, but the Yampa from Steamboat to somewhere above Cross Mountain might be an option.

You should really look at the White though. It runs parallel to the Yampa, just a little farther south...and sounds like what your looking for: American Whitewater - 01. North-South Fork confluence to Green River, White Colorado, US

GARNA’s mission is to foster stewardship of the resources of the greater Arkansas River region through education, volunteerism and experiences.
