Which IK for air travel/ocean paddle? Innova Double Twist?
Hi, I need an inflatable kayak for airline travel and ocean transit (solo and tandem) for spearfishing to offshore (1/4 to 2 mile) reefs and islands. Surf won't be an issue, but the wind can pick up to 8-10 knots in the afternoon.
I will be driving an economy car with surfboards, camping gear, and the yak. Lightweight and portability are important. Comfort is also important, because if the wind comes up and I have to paddle, paddle, paddle, I want to walk again, lol.
I have a lot of experience with hardshell SOTs year around on the Oregon Coast. I am most interested in the Innova Double Twist, Innova Helios II, and the Zoik Alterego II.
My only experience with inlatables is the Tahiti, lol. I know the paddling position is horrible and the tracking is non existent. I have an 8 week trip coming up, and I would like to use it for travel after that. Top notch boats like AE .and Aire are too heavy and/or complicated and pushing my price range. At home I'll use my hard shells.
I'm really interested in the Innova Double Twist due to the light weight, true portability, and lower cost. I know I'll sacrifice some performance and durability, but I think for my use if the tracking isn't too horrible it would be worth it.
The Helios II is heavier and more expensive than I'd like, but it's an option. I don't know if the performance difference is worth it.
The Zoik Alterego II looks great, but I can't find any info on how it packs, and I've seen a couple of bad quality reviews. I'd like more advice and firsthand accounts for all of these boats, and any others in the $750 and less category. My trip starts Nov. 1, I'd like to purchase and paddle locally for familiarity this summer. Thank you for any advice, I really want to be happy with my purchase.
