Where's a good play hole in Vail?

And parking too?

The Vail play park is an option but not all that good of one unless the flows are right. Park in the main garage and carry your boat down to the international bridge.

There used to be a good spot just at the bottom of Dowd Chute but for some reason (rock shifting?) it really doesn't play all that well any more.

Right under Bob's Bridge in Avon (bob's wave) when the chute is around 5ft. The wave at the end of the chute used to be super fun at most levels...then the sandbags and rock dam washed out. That is about it....bunch of sweet play in the avon/edwards stretches, but its on the fly action.[/u]

no park and play in the immediate area. the vail feature sucks due to a very short window, but if you catch it on the handfull of ideal flow days, it can be fun. the feature in dowd below tysons seems to be gone this year, the rocks must have moved as stated by someone else. betty's hole near the botanical gardens footbridge could be park and walk and play, but it is questionable quality and a long walk to boot.

best feature is about 45 miles west, 3 miles downstream of GWS on the colorado - south canyon. otherwise, 2 hours to BV/salida or golden, take your pick.

for the most part, west slope = river runnin. sad but true. the town of avon has talked about spending $800k on features near BOB bridge, but no rocks have moved yet. vail wants to fix up their feature, but sounds like a somewhat goofy idea (air bladder dams?). GWS, frisco, carbondale are all talking about building something, but they seem to be in the early stages of planning. catch on the fly is the way of the west. later.

South canyon is flushed now. Golden doesn't have enough water to justify the drive. If you choose any of these options, go to BV and/or Salida.

Bleachers is just starting to come in (110) if you're happy with endless cartwheels. Library is good, too. Probably not worth more than an hour drive at this point though. The new wave in Buena Vista is awesome! It's a really beautiful looking feature right now. Nice and sticky too. A little more water and it could be really amazing. I would say your best bet is taking an afternoon off, driving to the Ark and running running Pine Creek/Numbers/Brown's and stopping for a twilight BV play session on your way back. I did it last week. It was great. Sorry this doesn't help the Vail park and play topic too much, though.

Theres one in Burns on the Colorado. It's maybe 45 minutes away too.

The Avon park is supposedly moving forward, but no one seems to know anything about it.

Best play holes in Vail are all located below Dowd Chute in the S turns section. Below the trustle there is a sweet spot that is just retentive now, river right, you can't miss it. The other popular hole along the bike path before Kayak Crossing, wait a week on that one. As for parking Just run the chute from the Ranger Station Lot. Never a problem hitching on Hwy6. Later.
