Some recent scientific work ( I dont have the articles to cite) have found a connection with snowpack and soil moisture. The usual very dry june melts all of the snow quickly and dries out the land around the southern rockies when this land gets dry and hot the hot air rises and creates a low pressure over the 4cx. This low pressure is responsible for pulling in the moisture from the gulf of cali and the pacific. We had a good snow pack and a wet june so I would imagine the timing was disrupted and we never got the monsoon at all. If you remember we never got a great monsoon last year (at least in the ark valley not sure about san juans) after the big snow year. I did some work on this for a graduate term paper and found a weak negative correlation between April 1st SWE and July/August rainfall in the Ark valley. The correlation was not significant though. Just my thoughts

The K-word? I think you mean the N-word, but that doesn't have much to do with it. I just want to float my boat again, or put it up for the season. It seems to early to winterize my rafts. Plus if we can't get more water into Navajo, the releases will be at a minimum, which will effect how runnable the San Juan sections will be.

Good discussion so far. Interesting theories. Keep them coming.

This has been one of the wettest augusts I've ever seen in my long long 18 years of life up here in casper... We haven't turned the sprinklers on once this year.
