What happened to "Big" Sur?

Went for the first time today, and it definitely wasn't big. Still a wave, but not like what I've seen in recent pics/vids on here. Not familiar with open/closed on the damn downstream, but looked like maybe half the gates were closed. Guessing that was enough to slow down the river flow? Gauge was still 23,500ish. I was under the impression 20,000+ was good if the damn gates were open.

So, was it an issue of flow? Gates being closed? Combo of both?

Thankfully, a trip to Glenwood still delivered.

It was a friendly beginner surf and spin wave yesterday, but wouldn't allow for any big moves. Still fun, but on it's way out until...
Gates affect the flows as well as water. If you had 2000cfs there would be a little tiny feature where Big Sur normally is if they opened the gates (trust me, I've surfed it). Thus, if they close all the gates at 30,000, you would likely have nothing to surf. Assuming gates are open, it appears that the higher the better for flows.
