Shit happens, people forget things and we make due. If I show up w/o a throw bag I fully expect to get the stoic look and a tisk tisk and maybe even, "you can't paddle with us today." Complacency is never good in this sport. Baer, what was your crew's response to this blog?

On the river, I can abandon who I am and what I've done. However brief it lasts, while on the river I am nothing important and everything insignificant. I am flotsam, and happy to be so.

"Was the undercut u mentioned just below the video clip actually in the clip? Before reading that part of the write up (where the safety guy changed the fate of the guys getting tracker beamed), I was thinking how quickly that guy dropped down and helped the boater out. Quick moves."

Yea that was the undercut, you can see the water moving very freeley under the wall and where it goes is scary and dark.

"It sounds like you decided to boat the RF although u weren't feeling totally comfortable with the crew that ended up together for that day. Did I misinterpret that?"

No, you got it right, I definitely did not feel 100% on my crew, I did paddle because I knew a couple of strong facts. The run is a mile long. There is a road that is not easily accessible but is always on the left along the run. Brad is a tuff bastard and would have drug us all out of the valley if he had to. Most importantly I have never felt 100% in my crew, have doubts, even the best boaters stub there toes, and when you are paddling hard and harder sections a tiny misshape can turn disastrous.

"I think that would be a tough, but important call.
Anyone ever had that little voice that said, "walk away," but didn't and had the shit go down?"

I have undergone 3 major surgeries, vistied the hospital and handful more times, and have participated in 100s of rescues. If there isn't a voice in the back of your head, your probably not having any fun. Listen to that voice especially when he tells you that it's going to be soo much fun!

Hojo, I sent a copy of the write up to a couple of the guys before I posted it. In the end one was angry and after a discussion understood my point of view, the other three thought that it was a great way to shed some light on all of us being complacent.

I liked the write up. I think some class V paddlers are, perhaps, not complacent but self centered to the point that they subconsciosly double check their gear pile for skirt/helmet/pfd/paddle right before they pull out of the driveway but maybe not the throw bags and the pin kit because they don't need that so much. They are the guys that might forget to look back to see if the paddler behind them is on the right line. That stuff makes me nervous.
