West Coast NZ Connections

Im currently living in Wanaka and planning on being in Duniden on the 5th for Bliss-Fest to pick up my boat. Anyone know some West Coast Boaters looking to fire up some heli boating around Hokitika in early October. Thanks much Kyle Hagadorn

Yo Kyle! How's that small australian state doing? Mike and I got busy up here and missed you. Hope you have a sick fall - see you this winter.

Check out this kid: Alex's Blog. I boated with Alex a lot this spring - you guys should get some. I'm not sure where he's located, but I know he wants to paddle. I'll PM you his email.

First off Focker, NZ - not an Australian state... and if any kiwis heard that kind of talk they would likely beat you to the point where you'd have to use your male nursing skills on yourself.

Kyle - My homeboy Junior, otherwise known as Dave, is going to school in Christchurch. I use the word *going* loosely as he has already ditched a week or two to paddle on the west coast. Drop him an email at and he can probably hook you up with some peeps on the coast and will meet you for some action. Lucky.

Worst case scenario just head to Hokitika, pitch your tent at Lake Mahinapua (sp?) and split your time between the Mahinapua Pub (across the road from the campsite) and Flick's Cafe in downtown Hoki. Look for creekboats and be friendly. You may very well luck out on a heli trip or two. Worked for me. West Coast NZ = The Shit

I think Alex is in ChristChurch too. Not sure where that is though as far as west oast vs. east coast vs. north vs. south.

Thanks for the beta. All has been sweet on the South Island other than the lack of kayaking. Plan to fix that very soon.

If you're in Dunedin (or ChCh) look for NEW ZEALAND'S SOUTH ISLAND RIVERS by Graham Egarr. Might find it in a used bookshop or 'yak dealer. or on <>. Definitely worth a search. It's oldish, but has good descriptions of practically all the good boating water, access, best water levels, etc.

Hokitika's also a good place to get locally carved pounamu (greenstone or jade). Try the Traditional Jade Co. on Tancred St.

Kiwi boaters are friendly, but have their own way of doing things. Shut up and learn is a good way to go, especially for a Yank (or a West Islander).

Beautiful there– I envy you, mate.

yrs, Chip

Kyle - I am super jealous, boating in NZ is the shizznit. I would try posting on to see if you can hook up with some creekers. You could give Mick Hopkinson a call at the NZ kayak school in murchison as well. Talk to the bliss-stick fellas and I am sure they will get you a posse. There used to be a guy named Stew in Dunedin when I went there four years ago that ran the shit, like the Nevis, etc. Ask around, you are gonna have a great time. Over and out, Alex.
