upper san juan access

spring break plans have changed, now looks like were going to cedar mesa country, ut...

as far as the upper san juan section, is there a feasible access upstream of sand island? and then below there, is there any access below 191 at all? or is it straight to mexican hat? the section above sand island looks fun, but not sure theres time for the full 26 miles below there! any info is much appreciated....

montezuma creek

there is access 19 miles above sand island at montezuma creek. i haven't floated it but have heard of friends doing it. the river is apparently pretty shallow and braided up there. both sides are navajo land as well. those access permits are easy to get though. i think that sand island is the next river access below that. should be about the only ones on the water up there though!

There are a couple of ranch roads on the bluff to mex stretch. one that comes down to the riverhouse dwelling (maybe butler wash) and one that comes in near the end of the canyon (maybe the mexican hat road). I havent used either one but I have seen cars on both. there is a park and play at the end of the lower one at 3000. other than that i dont think anyone really uses them.

alright, thanks for the info...

the "riverhouse dwelling", is that a ruin located where comb ridge and the river meet? and is that road driveable at all?

was hoping to find a road down comb wash but there doesnt seem to be one, so trying to find access in that area, but its not looking friendly so far....

The Comb Wash road IS the "Riverhouse" road. It's 4WD with sandy wash crossings, but totally doable.

Steve is right, but I would go from Riverhouse/Comb Ridge down instead of Sand Island to Riverhouse. I think the scenery is much better lower in the run, plus more "rapids" (Class II). I have already been down there this year at 5000 cfs and it is moving along quite nicely. We are going to be releasing 4000 cfs starting Monday from Navajo Dam and then 5000 cfs beginning in mid-May. Only other thing I will say is that at 4000 cfs and above, we will have to do periodic inspections on the penstocks/gates, so every few days (14 or so), you will see a dip in the releases, but hopefully it will smooth out by the time it gets to Bluff.

alright, keep it coming, and thanks for the info already!

i think we're planning on checking out, even camping near the riverhouse ruins, or somewhere between the highway and the river on the comb wash road. so that access sounds doable.

how long of a float is it from comb wash to mex hat (or the access road mentioned above)? anything thats doable in a day?

It would be a full day float to Mexican Hat - 19.5 miles, but doable with the current flows. I still think you would need a permit from Sand Island.
