Upper Klamath, Oregon

I was just curious if anyone is heading to Oregon this fall/winter to run the Upper Klamath. The water flows year round since it is controlled by the power company. I had a dream about it last night so it must be time to bomb it.

Yo Whitelightning...what up bro?

Yo, when I saw that, I was thinking "duh, my friend Paul used to talk about the Kalamath".

Welcome to the Buzz fool.

I used to live about 3 hours from the Upper Klamath and we never went up to run it in the winter. It gets pretty ugly up on the Modoc Plateau this time of year. We pretty much treated that run as a summertime option and given the alternatives, didn't do it too often then either.

I remember the run at 1 generator approx 1500 cfs, as good fairly continuous class 3 with 2 long class 4 rapids, Caldera, and Hell's Corner. I haven't done it at the higer flow, but I understand 2 generators, about 3000 cfs get's pretty exciting. I haven't been up there since around 1992 though, so my memory might be a little sketchy.

I live about 45 minutes from this run and do it once a year at the max. It's really not that good for kayaking at 1 gun. Sharp volcanic rocks abound, it's nowhere to roll or play. Heard horror stories of people almost losing their ears while clipping rocks rolling. Decent for rafting but just not that good of a run. At two guns it's probably a lot better, but then when it gets two guns all the good runs are going too. Heads up on vehicle vandalism if you use the old stage shuttle on river left. Long shuttle either way, if you are going to do the stage road shuttle bring a bike, it's faster then driving back up to your car. Darin
