I did Pumphouse to Catamount with my 6 year old son over Memorial weekend @ 3250 in a fully loaded rig. Personally I think it is easier at 3Gish then it is at 1G. At lower flows there are a lot more rocks to get hung up on. I ran Needles eye left of the rock and it was an easy move off the pillow to go right after the big rock. At lower flows I assume right is the way to go.
I second running to Rancho so you get yarmity too. It is just hug left until past the hole and then go center to right to stay off the wall.
If you really want a easy stretch to start just go from Rancho to Catamount and you will not have any major rapids at all. Just stay away from the bridge pylons! If you fish the lower stretch is more fishing friendly.
No matter what run you do rig to flip. Then if you do, you will not have a yard sale everywhere! Reading the water is the key, so rig appropriately and dress for the water temperature, not the air temp and just go for it! If you are dressed appropriately and do wind up in the drink you will be in much better shape then if you were wearing shorts and a t-shirt!
