Upper Animas and OBJ this weekend

Three strong paddlers (Front Range and PA) are heading out to the Upper Animas for a one day adventure this Sunday (6/21). Since we've never been down that stretch, we're looking for a local to show us the 3 big ones (beers on us). We actually had some locals lined up but their plans changed due to FiBark.

Looks like the levels are rising to a reasonable level and better weather is predicted. We're also looking to run Daisy/OBJ/East on Saturday and/or the Lower Piedra on Monday so if anyone wants to meet, same offer applies (good karma and beer!).

Not a local, but have run the Upper A a few times (last way back in '94), and did it in one day a couple of weeks ago. Made it from put-in to the RR bridge at the top of the Box in just over five hours, which included a few short breaks every 90 mins or so. Didn't hammer it - just kept a steady pace all day. Did read and run on Garfield (through it before we knew it) and BDB. Carried No Name. Definitely a runnable line there, but we were playing things pretty conservatively since we were doing the one-day tour for the first time and it comes pretty early in the day. That drop has definitely changed since '94 - looks like the last big slide was pretty recent. As I remember, No Name is a couple of miles past Garfield. Pretty easy to spot - couple of big boulders in the top right, steeper drop, and RR crew was working there with some heavy equipment. Eddy out right to scout.

Love that run - non-stop boogie for over 25 miles, awesome scenery, and the Box at the end if you want to tackle it. Hope this helps a bit if you end up without a local guide. Enjoy!

You wont be the only crew out on Sunday, be really suprised if you were. . .Get to the put in early with your shuttle set and hang with the first crew to put on, should not be a problem. GOOD LUCK have fun!
