I'm looking for some information about current conditions of the Uncompahgre around Montrose, either from SWA to Trout or between Montrose and Delta. Would either be a good first timer run in a ducky vs. long paddles of the Gunnison ?
IE.. Class 2 max, No barbed wires or electric fences, etc?
Why not just do the town run? I haven't heard anything great about the section down to Trout. It seems to have a lot of landowner issues, barbed wire, and that nasty dam below Trout. The Gunny from Garlic Mikes to the WW park is a decent easy run, and then you can mess around in the park afterwards.
I don't really know, but a couple guys from GJ and Montrose are out here and mentioned something about the stretches between Ridgeway Reservoir and Montrose being OK for class 2.
There are actually 3 seperate runs on the Unc in our immediate area. I have run all these sections many, many times and know every inch of each run. Th SWA (Billy Creek run) is to low at these flows and many of the fishing drops simply do not go. The town run is the most runnable at this level, but there are other options within a 1.5 hr. drive of Montrose, with lots of great play and learning levels. Give me a jingle at 497-6512 and we'll talk about runs, and putting you on our kayaker list of 12 strong and growing.
