U.S. National Whitewater center questions

I would like to take a trip out to charlotte and check out the whitewater center but have a few questions for any one who has been there. I am an experienced kayaker , can anyone show up and boat there or is there some form of proficiency class or test you need to go through before they let you kayak? I have to leave my boat home when I fly , is there a place that rents boats in the area or what is the process to go through to demo one site? Thanks guys .

I went a couple of years ago, no problem getting a boat and paddle on site and they have a rather large boathouse. I would call to make sure 'cause most whitewater kayak shops are up in the hills.
Fun fact: little bit of southern appalachia tucked right next to C-town, drive the speed limit or you could end up squeling like a pig.

Its called a Lurk. Its what the old Norwegians used before we cut em up into two pieces

The whole process is process it really simple. Demo a boat from them its cheaper and easier to travel without it. I would bring your own dry top and all of that. I don't think that do a proficiency test. Also call ahead and reserve a spot as I think that they only allow 20 Kayakers a session. If you make a reservation for an earlier session and the session after yours is not full then you can stay for the other session for free I believe as well. The whole experience is really fun just dont set your expectations too high, while the features are really cool they are not quite as "world class" as you might expect.
