Treasure Canyon Beta...I think
I know there has been alot of buzz about this run, especially timing, levels, etc.
Since 04', I have not been back...hoping for this summer, so most of this is recolection from a very excited weekend 3 years ago....wow time flys.
The level on the new site (eddy flower), is somewhat close. I say that since there are a few obsticles at the start of this run. I would not yet say that 550cfs is HIGH. More like great, and higher (up to 720cfs) is ideal. I say this because to run the whole creek you need alot of water at the top. There is a tricky rock in the entrance to the first rapid, that if not completely covered, it would start your day off really bad. If you catch this above or at this level, remember the gage is at the bottom. Plan on having tripple the flow at the last few rapids. 56 falls, Twisler, the two 10+/- falls and Half and Half....these rapids will be screaming at you. And a hike out will become more difficult, and vertually impossible to eddy-scout from the diseapering horizon line.
When we first ran this it was May 29th 04. The snow year was Average, and the road was clear. I would recommend a truck with average clearance and the possibility of walking the remainder to the put-in.
I remember the night we ran this, the overnight temps reached well below freezing, I was stuck with Ricks dog shivvering all night. So this early in the season is NOT too early. However, due to the remoteness, if you headed there THIS Weekend (May 19th). I would call the small town of Platoro. Call the local Gas station or small (I mean really small) general store and ask if the 4X4 road (FR 380) is clear to Lake Annella or to the meadow at the intersection of were the road splits to Prospect MT. I googled this gas station, and got alittle beta.
Scout everthing from river left, there will be less snow, and be real heads up for Bears and Logs.
In addition to the new EddyFlower, here is the official write-up, and if your really interested I could e-mail photos. We might head there May 25-27th, if your interested. 602-478-881 cell. Actually looking for great folks to boat from May 20th-May 30th.
