Top Kayak High School Offers $5,000 Scholarship

Do you have a great river story to tell? Would you like to attend the nationÂ’s premier kayaking high school? The Academy of Huge Experiences is offering a $5,000 scholarship for the upcoming academic year. The recipient of the scholarship will be determined by an essay contest sponsored by American Whitewater, and will have the opportunity to travel with Huge Experiences to New Zealand and Chile, as well as many premier paddling destinations in North America.
AHE is an ideal setting for teens who are serious about their academics, have a strong passion for kayaking, and desire to travel the world. AHE was founded by David Hughes and recruits the worldÂ’s finest paddlers as kayak coaches. Bryan Kirk will be coaching for AHEÂ’s exciting quarter in New Zealand this fall. Alumni include Zach Mitchell, Ali Wade, Emily Jackson, Dan Simenc, Brooke Bevan, Pat Keller, and many more. The curriculum at AHE is entirely college prep, with AP courses offered as needed. Previous AHE students are attending such colleges as Virginia Tech, University of Georgia, George Washington University, and Warren Wilson College.
All essays must be received by August 8th. For complete details please check out: American Whitewater - Huge Experiences Scholarship

Please help to understand student loans, grants, etc

I heard that one can't get any grants, or other free money until the family contributes $8k. What if the family does not contribute can the student apply for unsubsidized loans? Also are those automatic loans to full time students or is it like applying for a regular loan and FICO and credit scores apply. What are other options for someone wanting to attend school with limited income? Please help to understand student loans, grants, etc. Thank you in advance.

Speaking of Alumni

HUGE Experiences is an incredible program, and an opportunity to discover one's own true potential as an individual in paddlesports. The coaching is exceptional, and the comraderie of the athletes keeps it fun.

The first summer I joined HUGE Experiences, I did the Colorado Tour as well as U.S. Team Trials in Canada, where 9 of 10 Jr. U.S. Team Members were from HUGE Experiences. At the Rock Island, TN training program we had the opportunity to go through rigorous training, weight lifting, and travel days to the Ocoee in preparation for the World Championships in Graz, Austria in 2003. This was the first season HUGE Experiences became an academy, and it has developed into an a school with the potential to accomodate the most enthused kayakers and academically proficient students. Thanks to an incredible group of coaches and athletes, HUGE Experiences is an academy that is shaping the culture and lifestyle of kayaking.

Good luck to those who try out for the scholarships, in your own kayaking, and in HUGE Experiences if you win!
