BV Whitewater Park Conditions @ ~600 cfs
With the Ark up to 586 on the Granite gauge (actually it just jumped to almost 700- sweet!), I thought I'd give everyone an update on conditions here at the BV whitewater park. Considering the snowpack and low water, there's plenty of fun to be had here! Playboating is good and there are tons of SUPers putting the park to good use as well. Staircase and downtown hole are most popular with the SUPers.
Top Hole (see my 1st post in the thread for photos)- Still probably the most fun all-around feature in a kayak at this level. A bit more wave-like than at 400, which means it's a bit flushier. Cartwheels, occasional loops, right blunts, spins, etc possible.
Staircase Wave (the front surf pic below)- very much a wave at this level. Definitely a very fun surf. Flatspins, carving, etc. Great place to work on wave spins and get a feel for your edges. I think this feature has been somewhat different since spring of 2011 (I think that was the last time they were in there).... I'm assuming it's a slight difference in pool height causing it, but originally this feature was a hole at these levels. Now it's a green wave and totally fun. Very dynamic for the SUPers too- Badfish river surfer is in its element here.
Staircase Wave 2 (the 2 loop pics below)- super random, but there's a second wave which has formed behind Staircase proper- it pulses from a powerful foam pile to nothing, but check it out- it offers the best loops in the park right now. Surf around until you're on top and it's breaking well, plug hard and go big!
Downtown hole- Great beginner/intermediate playboating hole. This one changes incrementally with more water- it maintains a mellow, controllable character, but it just gets more powerful and sticky with higher water. Great place to learn/ work on spins and get a feel for initiating cartwheels. Loops are a challenge but possible
LoDo (blunt pic below)- she's in! The center/ river right of the feature are weak/ flat/ flushy. But the river left pocket is formed and left blunts are a go. Super fun dynamic right spins. This wave is right on the verge of coming in strong with a good shape all the way across to river right. Currently it's pulsing between flushy in the middle to a river wide foam pile with a sweet river left blunt/ spin pocket. Any more water and I'll be spending most of my time at LoDo.
Long story short, come get some! I'll post an update on conditions if it holds at 700- you can assume it will all be better/ more powerful. SYOTR
