Time to start getting the SHOULDERS in shape

ok all, time to get serious.
Shoulder strengthening exercises will save you discomfort and dislocation. Take it from me, the $40,000 shoulder surgery is neither fun nor worth it.

I found Kent Ford has some good info and super easy exercises that will help you out long term. The link is below.

There's also a good page on weight-less shoulder exercises in Canoe and Kayak this month. It's probably the one useful page in the magazine, the rest is about sea kayaking and family canoeing.

I couldn't STRESS how true this is!!

I just got out of the sling a couple weeks ago (torn labrum posterior)! My second PT appt. is tonight! You never really understand how important your shoulder is until you don't have it or can't use it...especially when it's your dominant arm!! SUCKS!!

Yeah, I can't wait to get started on PT. I had Shoulder surgery on 2/14, and am all but useless with the right arm.

I had my supraspinatus tendon reattached to the humerus, the front of the labrum re-anchored to the glenoid as well as a decompression of the AC joint.

Would the dislocation not have happened if I had been doing weight training? We'll never know, but hard to picture it making much difference with the hit it took.

EASY paddling should resume mid join. August for good boating. Lame.

If anyone is interested in training MMA I'd highly recommend it for staying fit year round. Your fitness level could become a matter of life or death on the river. Long swims, getting stuffed under logs, having to muscle a pinned boat,... that stuff happens to all of us who paddle long enough.

MMA training already saved my life once, when I snapped my neck in my kayak and the only thing left was muscle and my head was dragging on the bottom. I had to hold my breath forever because my arms were paralyzed and I couldn't pop my skirt. I lived through it and I healed 6 months ahead of schedule. I couldn't imagine living through that and being able to come back to paddling if I hadn't been in good shape before it happened.

Now I train even harder because I keep running nightmare scenarios through my head, where I have to lift a log off my buddy or do an atomic situp to get out of a pin or whatever.

I train at the Arvada school of Easton BJJ so come by for a visit if you are curious about MMA. It is a ton of fun. I'd love to train with some kayakers.
