This is an amazing paddling destination...

Gotta admit, I am aware of the area, but never heard of this town. This is now top of my list to hit as soon as possible.

Serious goods, great town, and whitewater when we have none!

Seems the town is really welcoming and very behind having paddlers visit. Great job they are doing keeping the dam's at bay...

That is a really cool area alright!I havn't boated there but traveled there like 15 years ago and loved it.Veracruz and Jalapa are two of the nicer cities to visit in Mexico and close by.If you based yourself out of there you could get to the Huasteca, Chiapas ,or the Huatulco area runs on a night bus or a long half day if you have a vehicle.I think there are boats to rent, which is not the case in Chiapas or probably Huatulco either.A trip to Mexico City is pretty easy and worthwhile from there too.Nice variety of runs they have there.Beaches on that coast are sub par in general, take that trip to the Pacific for the surf if not the river.Hope you get to go.

Love the place

I spent a Fall in Jalcumulco as a safety kayaker in 1998 and loved the place. Not only are the rivers awesome, but the people are too. I was always treated well and was welcomed into the community. I spent a few months the next Fall in Huatulco, and same story there. I worked for Jim's partner company Expediciones Tropicales. I haven't made it back since but it is on my list once my kids get bigger.
