I have never seen anything like some of those drops....I can't get a handle on the geology there....must be some intense geologic uplift due to a highly seismically active area.

How do those guys fit their huge balls in their boats?
I hope in the future Americans are thought of as a warlike, vicious people, because I bet a lot of high schools would pick "Americans" as their mascot. -Jack Handy

Been trying to tell you guys all along this part of our planet kicks serious ass! Though few have the sack to run what these guys do ,there is plenty of similar stuff on a smaller scale for the rest of us. As far as the geology they said travertine which typically forms staircases of falls with distinct turquoise color ,like AguaAzul over 500 falls from 3 to 80 ft. in 3 miles of river[multiple channels].There is volcanic and granite geology in the region as well and sometimes wierd combinations.
They didn't even mention other sections of the Santo Domingo where river runners have had hostile encounters with locals and bandits.
Chiapas is culturally more like Guatemala than Mexico and is super mountainous tropical jungles full of ruins and indigenous peoples,it aint no Cancun or Tiajuana.
