As most of us know, if you arn't building a bomb or other weapon, goverment money is hard to come by these days. The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) works to buy open space and enhance outdoor recreation opportunities at both the state and national level. The LWCF automatically gets hundreds of millions of dollars in royalty fees that energy companies pay to the government but... the money only goes to open space and outdoor recreation if the President asks for it and Congress decides to spend it!
This year, the President asked for a whopping $0.
Luckily our own state senator, democrat Ken Salazar and Susan Collins, a Republican from Maine ar trying to rally the Senate to change the $0 to $125 million. This could mean a big boon for river conservation in a number of realms. To help please go to American Whitewater's website - http://www.americanwhitewater.org/co.../display/full/
- and write a thoughtful letter to your state senators. Desktop activism at it's finest but our senators will listen to us if we speak out. They only get to stay in office if WE vote for them. DO it.
