The Claw in Cataract

I just got back from 6 weeks of trips in Dinosaur, and we were getting stories coming north about a new hole in the Big Drops - sort of a Big Drop 2 and a half - that formed right at the end of May and that the NPS is calling The Claw. Sounds like it was a bit washed out in the 60's but was super steep in the 40's.
My questions:
1) Does anyone have pictures, video, or links to images?
2) Does anyone have stories of running the Big Drops after the new hole was in?
This makes me sort of regret running Lodore & Yampa at the expense of Cat this year... 21 days with flows >50,000...

Getting a Cat permit

It's super easy to get on Cat. You just gotta contact the NPS office in Moab and buy one. They have a total number of users per year, and I know prior to this year they've never hit that number (I think it's 7000 per season). So, if 7000 ppl bought permit slots in May, then no one could run the river for the rest of the season. A flawed system in my opinion, but hasn't been a problem thus far.
The permit, regardless of the # of ppl, is a fixed price.

Not regretting my Dino trips, it was a great couple weeks: Yampa runs at 10 & 15, and Lodores at 4300 (twice) and 1200 - I was on Deso when the Yampa hit 21. I just wish I had run down south for a week to pull a triple rig through the big drops. The wife and I on our 15' boat when Cat is running 5 to 10 is very different from a commercial trip when the river's at 60. Or, in this case, when it is in the 40's and the new hole is out.
Now I'm back in the urban jungle trying, and failing, to get my mind back on city stuff, and I would love to see some pics of the new hole. is offline   Reply With Quote
