Teen Kayakers Declare Independence on Ottawa River.

Who knew the echoes of American Independence could be found along the banks of the Ottawa River? Following the example of the founding fathers, New River Academy’s United States Government class has declared its independence from an oppressive regime.

Just proud of what we are doing educationally.

As a former public school educator I appreciate education in all aspects. It is a dream come true for the kayaking community and educators to have the opportunity to teach and learn in a near perfect academic learning environment.
Many of our students are on financial support or scholarships. They have worked hard to afford possibly even one semester with our program.

Thanks for taking the time to check out the site and offer comments,

David Hughes

David- from one educator to another I think your school is great! I really like how you incorperate travel/school/kayaking all into one school. The experiences those students have are one's that will last a life time. I commend you for being able to find a way to bring 3 of the greatest aspects of life together into one cohesive learning environment.

Don't mind the unfounded comments of a few. I enjoy reading about your school's adventures as I'm sure others on this site do too.

The only thing I don't like about your program is that I'm not part of it!

I second cecil's comments.

I have taught in a situation similiar to David's school except my kids were ski racers in Vail, CO. The small classes and the sports aspects definately give the kids a great opportunity for excellence in as well as out of the classroom.

Keep up the great work David and hopefully I'll get to join you on some adventures sometime in the near future.

Mike

gh, not offended at all.

gh,

No worries. Sometimes I get carried away with our posts. One of our school's biggest misconceptions is that our school might be sacrificing education.
Thus, it has became a goal to exhibit to the paddling community our unique educational program and how solid it's foundations are.

So, I am actually grateful for any constructive criticism that helps us realize the perception of our school.

Learning from your post: To accomplish our above goal of promoting education and to address your point we are restructuring our posts. It is our goal to publish educational articles that include information that benefits the public. Additionally, we will continue teaching journalism and photography skills.

Thanks,

David
