Steamboat this weekend...

Looking for some beta on class III/ IV- paddling around Steamboat for this weekend.

Also, I heard rumors of a comp going on this weekend in Steamboat. Can't find anything on the web. Does anyone have any more info?

To help celebrate its 15th anniversary, Paddler magazine has announced its first-ever $4,000 Paddler Pro Invitational event to be held in the magazine’s home town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Monday May 29, 2006. Brought to you by Dagger kayaks, the cash-purse event is timed to coincide with the Teva Mountain Games, drawing the world’s best kayakers to the Yampa River for a creek race and freestyle competition. With regional snowpack at a near-record high, the event—to be broadcast on Resort Sport Network--promises thrills and spills as the nation’s best vie for a piece of the purse and coveted bragging rights. “We’ve had 15 great years, and this is a way to celebrate both that milestone as well as the athletes who have kept pushing the sport forward,” says Paddler Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Eugene Buchanan. “It should be a great event.”
The two-event competition includes a mile-long race on Yampa tributary Fish Creek, as well as a freestyle competition on Charlie’s Hole, a newly built feature on which the City recently won a Recreational In-channel Diversion (RICD) water right. Prize money will be divided among the top three finishers in men’s and women’s categories for each event, with the majority going to the overall combined winners.
Following the event will be Paddler magazine’s 15th Anniversary party, sponsored by New Belgium Brewery, providing just as much edge-of-your-seat excitement. Paddler would like to thank sponsors Dagger, Steamboat Ski Corp., Kokatat, Fortress, Dermatone, Adventure Technology, Smith and the American Canoe Association for supporting this event.

The snow is movin' on up. People are mountain biking. You still can't go to high (above 9,500). Mad Creek trail is open a long way up and the creek is pretty clean by the way if anyone is ready to run it. Needs to come down a little. Pretty ragin right now.....

Thanks for the beta, Smokey.

I was wondering if you could give me an idea of whether fish creek and willow will be the only runnable IV-V creeks this weekend, or if the Elk Box Canyon or Mad Creek may be a reasonable levels. For someone not coming for the comp, would it be better to wait a weekend and catch those at a lower level? Thanks!

This is obviously just opinion so take it with a grain:
Mad Creek is beautiful but big. At the level it's at right now and the canyon walls, you'd better have your A game going. I think it needs to come down just a wee bit because the walls are so tight. Solid Class V right now. It's going to be good to go to July. But it also may come down for this weekend and that would be ideal. The Elk Box is wider and can be done at higher flows. You need to use your own judgement on whether it's good to go for you or not. Here's what's in :
Fish--High, fun continous whitewater (there's been some carnage on the Upper)
Yampa Town Run--Play Holes C, D, Double Z--the whole thing is sick!
Elk Box--at high flow, plus Main Elk play run (big water, catch on fly waves)
Willow--Med. Flow--Run Willow into Main Elk for a good run
Cross Mountain--High flows
Slater Creek north of Craig---Go Get some waterfall love!

This weekend and next weekend will both be awesome. The pros are going to make the hole look fantastic. I'm a bit biased but I think it would be great to be here this weekend for the competition and Paddler's 15th anniv. party (free Beer). So much boating. We really are lucky........Any other RCRE choades, feel free to add anything..........

Smokey hinted at it, but if III/IV- is what you seek, then hit the Elk below the Box all the way to County Road 129. It gives you 8 or so miles of BIG class III. The water is cold and continuous.

BTW, Fish is clean top to bottom. There is a huge tree just above the takeout (Safeway). It was caught on the bridge, pointing downstream, but you could get around it on the left, and probably on the right. If it moves it could be a hazard, especially if it gets caught in the culverts under Hwy. 40.

Slater is still going in the afternoons too.
