source - wood in slot machine?

Joe gives me an unsure report that somebody he knows told someone else that someone ran it yesterday and found a big log in slot machine, making it a mandatory portage. Can anyone confirm this report?

I paddled the Source on Wednesday and Slot Machine along with the rest of the run was good to go. Never hurts to scout the entire run from the bottom up though.

That would suck if it's true, because it's not coming out of there anytime soon.

And I agree with Alex- with the daily flow fluctuations in that drainage, I ALWAYS scout the entire run. Last year I was in the first group to run the Source and a fellow boater (I'll refrain from naming him) was up there scouting and told us the run was clean- so we just drove to the put-in. I ran point on the Slot and broke a 3" diameter branch across my chest in the middle of it.

There is no substitute for your own set of eyes.

yeah, I was there wednesday too, but heard this report since then. I've always walked the whole run as well - just wanted to see if anybody out there knows for sure if the slot is clogged up

I'll probably be up there in the morning, so if nobody finds it first, I'll post the beta.

We didn't see anything in the Slot this weekend but there is another log river wide near the bottom if I remember correctly. Someone help me out here with the exact location. Lower flows we were able to get over it and higher flows it was completly covered. Heads up as always in there. -t

el flaco, if that was me that told you the source was clean and you hit a log, i apologize. if i remember correctly, there was a log right at the lip of the first drop but you could still get around it. but this sounds more like something forest or gary would tell you. remember that the source constantly changes and you should not blame other people for your bad lines.

On Sat it was all clean, including my lines! Watch out for the willows section though. We need to get in there when the flows drop or it wont be runnable next year.

It wasn't you, unless you've got multiple screen names. As for 'bad lines', if you've paddled the Source you know that there's one line through the Slot....and that would be....through the Slot. Which is where the log was.

The mistake that I made (and the guy that I was paddling with) was listening to someone else's beta. So, my point was, "there's no substitute for using your own set of eyes", not to blame someone else. It's perfectly conceivable that the log swept into the Slot after he scouted and before I put on; but regardless, I should have walked the run myself, because I wouldn't have to guess if the guy actually walked to the edge of the rapid and looked into the landing, or whether he just took a look from far upstream and missed the presence of the log.

TBoner- that river-wide log was in the busy water a few hundred yards above the entrance rapid to Dead Hiker. I snuck around it to the far left, but both Alex and Dawn boofed it after I stopped below to warn them. Looked to big too remove with anything but a chainsaw- lower water would make it easier to get around & higher water would leave the boof available. We'll have to get it out later this summer. And by the way, thanks for trucking upstream and letting us know about the pinned boat it Dead Hiker. How was your second run?
