Sizing A Creek Boat?

Does anyone know a rule of thumb the size of a creek boat an individual should purchase based on their weight? The reason I bring this up is that it seems like Jackson creek boats tend to have about 10 gallons more displacement for a recommended weight than other boats such as Wavesport and Pyranha. Thanks in advance for your input.

One thing to consider is manufacturers measure the displacement differently, so a 70 gallon Jackson boat might not be the same volume as a 70 gallon Pyranha boat.

Thanks for the info. This is counter intuitive because I would think that the displacement would simply be the volume that the entire inside of the boat contains. Anyone know how boat displacement may be measured differently?

throw out the volume number, don't even look at it!
I have no idea how the manufacturers measure it (cad, filling with water, Ouija board, guess, what sounds good???) but I'd be willing to bet real money not one in ten is correct, damn half the weight measurements are off and you'd think that should be easy enough...volume, forget about it.
In my experience the only sure way to know if a boat will fit you is to sit in it and the way to know if it will work for you is to paddle it a few times.
That being said, by all means look at the specs but only as a guide for what boats to demo not as fact.

Go by paddler-weight to help you choose what to demo. Generally with creek boats, you can go under the minimum paddler weight and still be better for the extra volume.
